Dirk Reith (*1947) studierte Komposition an der Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf bei Milko Kelemen; parallel Tonigenieurstudium. Von 1974 bis 1976 studierte er Computer-Komposition am Institut of Sonology der Universität Utrecht bei Gottfried Michael Koenig. 1986 war er innerhalb eines Forschungsvorhabens Leiter des Fachbereichs Musik in der Projektgruppe zur Planung des ZKMs (Zentrums für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe). Aufführung seiner Werke in Europa, USA, Ostasien und Australien. Die Komposition "nested loops III" für Klavier und Tonbänder wurde für die ICMC (International Computer Music Conference) 1986 in Den Haag ausgewählt. Die Komposition verSTIMMUNG wurde für die ICMC 1996 in Hong Kong ausgewählt und mit einer CD-Veröffentlichung ausgezeichnet. Für die ICMC 2000 in Berlin wurde seine Komposition "Dialog" aus Méchanique Mon Amour, für Altsaxophon, Video und Elektronik ausgewählt. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zur Kompositionstheorie in instrumentaler und elektronischer Musik und umfangreiche Forschungsvorhaben auf dem Gebiet der Computermusik. Als Gastdozent Lehrtätigkeit an Universitäten und Instituten in folgenden Ländern: Holland, Frankreich, Österreich, Italien, USA, Australien, Japan, Korea, Kolumbien und Israel.
Schwerpunkte der kompositorischen Beschäftigung in jüngster Zeit liegen in der Verbindung von mechanischen Instrumenten und Elektronik, bei multimedialen Bühnenprojekten und auf dem Gebiet der algorithmischen Komposition.
Dirk Reith ist Gründer des Elektronischen Studios an der Folkwang-Hochschule Essen (1971) und war dort bis 2012 Professor für Komposition. Er ist Gründer des ICEM (Institut für Computermusik und Elektronische Medien) der Folkwang Universität der Künste und war bis 2011 künstlerischer Leiter des Instituts. Zusammen mit Dietrich Hahne begründete er das Internationalen Festival für Computer-Musik und Medienkunst ex machina in Essen. Er ist Gründungsmitglied der gnmr (Gesellschaft für Neue Musik Ruhr) und war über mehrere Jahre Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft. Sechs Jahre leitete er die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Multimedia und Kunst und die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Interaktive Medienbühne NRW des Ministeriums für Schule, Weiterbildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung des Landes Nord-Rhein-Westfalen. Von 1996 bis 2011 war Dirk Reith Herausgeber der CD Reihe "ex machina“. Seit 2012 ist Dirk Reith als Prof. Emeritus am ICEM der Folkwang Universität der Künste tätig.

The composition verSTIMMUNG was selected for the ICMC 1996 in Hong Kong and was awarded a CD release. Numerous publications on composition theory in instrumental and electronic music and extensive research projects in the field of computer music. Guest lecturer at universities and institutes in the following countries: Holland, France, Austria, Italy, USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, Colombia and Israel.
The focus of his recent compositional work has been on the combination of mechanical instruments and electronics, on multimedia stage projects and on the field of algorithmic composition.
Dirk Reith is the founder of the Electronic Studio at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen (1971) and was professor of composition there until 2012. He is the founder of the ICEM (Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media) at the Folkwang University of the Arts and was artistic director of the institute until 2011. Together with Dietrich Hahne, he founded the International Festival for Computer Music and Media Art ex machina in Essen. He is a founding member of gnmr (Gesellschaft für Neue Musik Ruhr) and was chairman of the society for several years. For six years he headed the working group Multimedia and Art and the working group Interactive Media Stage NRW of the Ministry for Schools, Further Education, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1996 to 2011, Dirk Reith was editor of the CD series "ex machina". Since 2012, Dirk Reith has been Professor Emeritus at the ICEM of the Folkwang University of the Arts.
